Meet the 2008 Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity Winners!
Singer and actor Faye Wong has been crowned Asia’s Sexiest Vegetarian woman for 2008, while Bollywood hottie Amitabh Bachchan has won the title of Asia’s Sexiest Vegetarian man. Hot Hollywood star Abbie Cornish, who has recently been seen in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, has taken the title for Australia’s Sexiest Vegetarian woman and singer and songwriter Xavier Rudd has been voted Australia’s Sexiest Vegetarian man.
Cornish, a longtime animal lover, has been vegetarian since she was 13, and she works with local animal protection group Voiceless to teach children empathy and compassion for animals. The AFI Award-winning actor says of her feelings for animals while growing up on a farm, “I was really puzzled by the idea that people could feel compassion for a dolphin but, at the same time, they were quite prepared to eat a cow or a pig. It was confusing because I thought of all animals as equal.”
Rudd, who went vegetarian after driving past a factory farm in California and seeing the crowded and barren conditions that animals live in, says, “When I realized how animals have to suffer in the meat industry, I decided never to eat meat again. The industry’s anonymity and the treatment of animals as worthless beings used only for production really annoyed me.”
Often referred to by her fans as “heavenly queen” or “diva of Asia,” Wong has graced the covers of Vogue, Elle, and Marie Claire, in addition to having a successful musical career. Bachchan, who is currently the highest-paid Bollywood actor, holds the record for the most Best Actor nominations at India’s Filmfare Awards.
Stars’ reasons for keeping animals off their plates are as diverse and inspiring as their talents—from avoiding the inexcusable cruelty to animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses to improving their own health to helping the environment by not contributing to factory-farm pollution.
