Ruby Rose recently joined forces with PETA Australia and Maxim magazine to become the latest of many stars to show their skin for a good cause. Although the model and MTV presenter has had countless offers in the past, not to mention hundreds of thousands of dollars waved under her nose, she has always turned them down flat.

The fact that she agreed to do this shoot for free has people asking, “Why now?”

When questioned on Fox FM, Ruby told listeners that she agreed to strip down without compensation because she wanted to do something she’d be proud of later in life. Speaking up for animals who can’t do so themselves is indeed a noble cause – one Ruby can be very proud of.

Eighty-five percent of the fur industry’s skins come from animals on fur factory farms – dismal, often filthy places where thousands of animals are usually kept in wire cages for their entire lives. As on factory farms where animals are raised for food, the methods used on fur factory farms are designed to maximise profits, always at the expense of the animals.

To cut costs, fur farmers pack animals into unbearably small cages, preventing them from taking more than a few steps in any direction or doing anything that is natural and important to them, such as running, swimming, making nests and finding mates. Many animals go insane under these conditions. The anguish and frustration of life in a cage leads many animals to self-mutilate, biting at their skin, tails and feet; frantically pace and turn in endless circles and even cannibalise their cagemates.

Ruby joins other celebrities – including Pamela Anderson, Charlize Theron and fellow Aussies Imogen Bailey and Natalie Imbruglia – in the fight against cruelty.

You can join us in our fight for global compassion, too, by pledging not to wear fur today!
