PHOTO: Giant PETA Cup Occupies Local Starbucks Over Non-Dairy Milk Upcharge

On Wednesday, a PETA supporter wearing a cow costume joined protesters carrying signs and a massive inflatable Starbucks cup as they congregated at the coffee chain’s Berjaya Times Square location to slam Starbucks Malaysia for its vegan milk upcharge. They pointed out that the upcharge incentivizes customers to opt for dairy, even though 87% of Malaysians are lactose intolerant, cows are forcibly impregnated repeatedly and separated from their babies for human dairy consumption, and the industry is a top producer of the greenhouse gases that are driving the climate catastrophe.

“Every non-dairy milk fee at the register shows Starbucks for what it currently is: a greedy corporation putting profits over animals, the planet, and customers’ health,” says PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA is demanding that Starbucks Malaysia put its money where its mouth is and end this shameful upcharge.”

PETA Asia—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
