PETA Statement: Animals Abandoned in Dubai as Expats Flee
PETA Asia President Jason Baker has issued the following statement in response to reports of dogs and cats being abandoned in Dubai:
Reports of dogs and cats being abandoned on the streets of Dubai or dumped outside overwhelmed rescue centres highlight a cruel reality: animals are too often treated as disposable when circumstances change. Current events may be accelerating the crisis, but abandonment has long been an ongoing problem in the UAE, driven by irresponsible breeding and weak accountability. There is never an excuse for leaving animals behind to suffer, starve, or die—guardianship is a lifelong responsibility, not a temporary convenience.
PETA is calling on UAE authorities to take action by implementing an immediate ban on the breeding of cats and dogs and by introducing strict penalties for abandonment, including permanent bans on animal ownership for anyone who leaves an animal behind.
