PETA Statement: Injured Sambar Deer Found in Taipei

PETA Asia President Jason Baker has issued the following statement in response to reports that a sambar deer found trapped in a drainage channel in Taipei appeared to have antler-harvesting wounds:

“This distressed deer’s apparent injuries are a tragic reminder of the suffering hidden behind the deer velvet industry. PETA Asia’s recent investigation in Taiwan revealed deer being forcibly restrained, pinned to the ground, and having their antlers cut off while they visibly struggled in fear and pain. Investigators documented deer frantically attempting to escape, kicking in terror, and bleeding from freshly cut antlers. Some deer were confined for years in barren enclosures, deprived of the freedom they would enjoy in nature.

 

Deer velvet comes at a tremendous cost to animals — those exploited for deer velvet can spend their lives in confinement only to endure this painful ordeal again and again. PETA urges consumers to reject deer velvet and all other products derived from animal suffering.”
