Bo-Lin Chen Stars In New Anti-Sealing Ad From PETA

Award-Winning Actor Asks His Legions of Fans Never to Buy or Wear Products Made From the Skins of Baby Seals

Beijing — Posing next to the caption “Save the Seals. End Canada’s Seal Slaughter,” award-winning actor Bo-Lin Chen appears in a brand-new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia. Chen and PETA want consumers to know that buying or wearing apparel made from the skins of baby seals is supporting one of the cruelest industries in the world. The ad was shot by ace photographer Joshua Lin, styling was done by Ming Ming, and makeup and hair were done by Kim Huang.

“Fashion must never come at the expense of baby seals, who are repeatedly bludgeoned or shot and often skinned alive,” says Chen. “Everyone can help do their part to end this travesty simply by refusing to purchase any product made from seals.”

During the annual slaughter, seal pups are shot or have their heads bashed in while other babies watch in fear and try in vain to escape. Many animals are skinned alive. Because of this cruelty, the market for seal fur and skin is quickly drying up. The European Union, Mexico, Russia, and the U.S. have banned seal products, and world leaders—including Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama—have spoken out against the massacre. Just yesterday, Taiwan passed a law to ban the import of live seals and all seal products, including meat, fur and oil. Because of the declining market for seal products, Canadian officials have desperately been looking for new buyers and subsequently turned to China.

Chen joins a growing list of international celebrities—including Gao Yuanyuan, snowboard superstar Hannah Teter, Paul McCartney, and Pamela Anderson—who have teamed up with PETA to speak up for seals. Many Chinese stars—including Shu Qi, Barbie Hsu, Gigi Leung, and Karen Mok—have taken to Weibo to protest the annual slaughter.
