PETA Calls On Kewpie to Ditch Eggs After Footage Emerges of Cruelty to Chickens at Company Supplier

Shocking Video Shows Hens Suffocated, Left to Rot in Cages for Mayonnaise Brand  Kewpie

Tokyo – PETA is calling on international mayonnaise maker Kewpie to break with eggs – and cruelty – after obtaining shocking video footage of suffering chickens on Miyapo egg farms. The abused hens were reportedly used to supply eggs to Kewpie.

The footage shows workers painfully twisting the wings of live chickens before dropping them from the second floor of a building. Others were stuffed into plastic bags and left to suffocate.

Injured birds were crammed into cages so small that they couldn’t even spread their wings. The stressed birds had missing feathers, which is common in the egg industry, and some were suffering from a prolapsed vent, a painful condition caused by excessive egg-laying. Others endured a prolonged death after becoming entangled in the wire mesh of their cages. Surviving hens were forced to live alongside decomposing cagemates.

“Since Kewpie strives to contribute ‘great taste, empathy, and uniqueness’ [emphasis added], I’m sure you’ll be shocked to learn that a PETA exposé revealed a total lack of empathy for gentle hens on farms that were reportedly supplying eggs to you,” writes PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “We appreciate that your company offers Kewpie Egg Care vegan mayonnaise and will soon be releasing Hobotama vegan scrambled eggs, but it’s time to break free from cruelty altogether by switching to an entirely egg-free mayonnaise line. … Please, don’t miss this opportunity to do right by hens and show that Kewpie has empathy, as it claims.”

PETA’s letter to Kewpie is available upon request.

The group has filed a complaint with the police, which is investigating the alleged acts of cruelty to animals on Miyapo’s farms.

Cruelty is pervasive in the egg industry, which treats animals as commodities instead of as living, feeling beings. Last month, PETA released similar video footage showing rampant abuse and neglect on a farm belonging to ISE Foods, Japan’s largest egg producer, which is certified to sell eggs at the Tokyo Olympics.

Broadcast-quality video footage of cruelty to chickens at Miyapo egg farms are available upon request.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
