PETA Statement re Taipei Zoo Orangutan Ke Yi’s Caesarean Section and Newborn Twins
PETA Asia President Jason Baker has issued the following statement regarding the recent news that orangutan Ke Yi at Taipei Zoo underwent a caesarean section to deliver twins, one of whom died shortly after birth while the other remains in intensive care:
This is not a story of conservation but a glimpse into a lifetime of suffering awaiting Da Bao, who, if they survive, will be denied everything natural and meaningful to an orangutan. From isolation and confinement to the psychological distress that defines life in captivity, the future ahead is far more troubling than this already tragic beginning. PETA urges that Da Bao and Ke Yi be transferred to a sanctuary and that their lives be respected in natural habitats, not in zoos.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment” – points out that Every Animal Is Someone. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow PETA Asia on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
