PHOTO: Nearly Naked Woman ‘Milked’ in PETA’s Plea to Dump Dairy This Mother’s Day
Bodypainted as a cow, with her chest covered by little more than suction pumps, a PETA supporter turned heads as she was “milked” outside WalterMart in Makati today to remind everyone that cows produce milk only to feed their babies—but in the dairy industry, their beloved calves are stolen from them so that the nourishment intended for them can be sold to humans. The provocative display urged onlookers to show mothers of all species some love this Mother’s Day by going vegan, while volunteers handed out free vegan starter kits.
“Mother cows feel deep love for their babies, just as human mothers do, but in the dairy industry, they’re deprived of any chance to nuzzle or nurture their calves—all so that they can be exploited as milk-producing machines,” says PETA Senior Campaigner for the Philippines Jana Sevilla. “PETA encourages everyone to choose compassion this Mother’s Day and beyond by going vegan.”
In the dairy industry, cows are forcibly inseminated (raped)—workers insert an arm into the cow’s rectum and a metal rod to deliver semen into her vagina. Workers tear the newborn calves away from their mothers, often within hours of birth. Mother cows have been known to try hiding their babies and frantically chase after and call for them days after they’ve been taken. Male calves are often slaughtered for veal, while female calves endure the same fate as their mothers—repeatedly impregnated until their bodies break down and they’re sent to slaughter.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
