Video: Milestone in 2023! 10,000th Animal Sterilized for Free by PETA
Metro Manila — In 2023, PETA sterilized the 10,000th animal as part of its spay/neuter program in partnership with Biyaya Animal Care. Every month, PETA staff and volunteers visit underserved communities in the region to provide free “kapon” and ligation surgeries for cats and dogs whose guardians wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them. The group sponsored and coordinated surgeries for more than 4,000 animals in 2023 alone.
But this wasn’t the only milestone PETA achieved this year. The group also adopted out more than 80 dogs and cats into permanent loving homes, treated stray animals for mange and parasitic infections, responded to cruelty cases, and provided free veterinary services to countless desperate guardians.

“By spaying and neutering 10,000 animals, hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats won’t be brought into a world without the means to care for them,” says PETA Asia Director of Animal Assistance Programs Ashley Fruno. “PETA is celebrating this milestone and looking forward to 10,000 more, and we’re asking guardians to help by only adopting animals from shelters, not buying them, and always getting them sterilized.”
Despite significant work to stem the tide, every year many cats and dogs are born into a life on the streets or are abandoned to fend for themselves, leaving them at risk of being hit by cars, succumbing to disease, or being abused. Others are euthanized in municipal pounds because of a lack of willing adopters. Having animals spayed or neutered is the single most effective way to help prevent suffering caused by companion animal overpopulation.
In addition, sterilization prevents the development of several reproductive health issues and can lead to longer and happier lives.
PETA’s Ampon Alaga program focuses on reducing the companion animal overpopulation crisis in the Philippines by offering free “kapon” and ligation services to indigent animal guardians. The program also promotes adoption of native dogs and cats, rescues animals in need, and finds them loving homes.
