Have a Heart for Animals: ‘Cow’ and ‘Pig’ to Propose a Vegan Valentine’s Day

What:            A mooving message will come to Colon Street on Tuesday as supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)—dressed as a cow and a pig—brandish heart-shaped signs urging passersby to show love for all animals on Valentine’s Day by going vegan. And to help people make the switch, supporters of the group will pass out free vegan starter kits.

“Cows and pigs are self-aware individuals who feel love and bond with their offspring, just as humans do,” says PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA is asking people to have a heart and leave animals off their plates on Valentine’s Day and beyond.”

Billions of cows and pigs live short, miserable lives in the meat industry, where they’re subjected to extreme crowding, routine mutilations without pain relief, a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse, and a violent, painful death. Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of suffering from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and strokes.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
