Photo Op: Animal Activists to Barbecue a ‘Baby’ in Advance of Mid-Autumn Festival

What:               As locals prepare to fire up the barbecue for the Mid-Autumn Festival, PETA supporters will serve up some food for thought near Taipei 101 on Thursday by barbecuing a lifelike “baby” on a grill that reads, “Try to Relate to Animals’ Fate. Go Vegan.” The animal defenders will point out that pigs and chickens are often only a few months old when they’re slaughtered for human consumption.

“No one belongs on a grill, whether they’re a piglet, a calf, or any other sentient being,” says PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA encourages anyone horrified at the thought of chowing down on a child to extend their empathy to all other animals and please go vegan.

Where:            Taipei City Hall’s southeast plaza (See the Google Maps link here.)

When:              Thursday, September 12, 2 p.m.

Interviews will be available on site and remotely. Photos of the event will be available on Google Drive after 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Why:  Every year, billions of animals endure short, miserable lives in the meat industry. In Taiwan and around the world, animals are raised in filthy conditions and are subjected to extreme crowding, routine mutilations without pain relief, a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse, and a violent, painful death.

Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in Taiwan, as well as cancer, strokes, diabetes, and obesity.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow the group on XFacebook, or Instagram.
