Easy Money? PETA Offers RM10 to Be Caged Like an Animal for One Minute in Launch of Worldwide Campaign.
Kuala Lumpur — To encourage empathy for animals caged in the cruel meat, dairy, and egg industries, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering people the chance to take their place—at least for one minute. On Tuesday, shoppers at Kasturi Walk will have the opportunity to be locked in a tiny cage and earn 10 ringgit for every minute they stay.
Where: Outside Kasturi Walk, 32, Jalan Hang Kasturi, Kuala Lumpur City Centre. Google Maps link here.

“PETA invites everyone to get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a chicken or a pig crammed into a tiny cage, with no room to turn around, stretch, or engage in any natural behaviours, for their entire life,” says PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “We encourage anyone disturbed by the experience to help ensure no more animals have to suffer this misery by going vegan.”
Chickens form complex social structures, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do. Pigs are soothed by music, recognise their own names, and show empathy for other pigs who are happy or distressed. Yet in the meat industry, chickens, pigs, and other animals live short, miserable lives in cramped, filthy sheds and cages before being hauled off to slaughter at just a few weeks or months old.
In addition to sparing chickens and other animals immense suffering, people who go vegan dramatically reduce their carbon footprint as well as their risk of major health conditions. There’s no nutritional need for humans to eat animal-derived foods. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organisation of food and nutrition professionals, vegans are at reduced risk of ischemic heartdisease—one of the leading causes of death in Malaysia —as well as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer,
After Kuala Lumpur the protest will head to Singapore, Bangkok, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and New York City.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow PETA Asia on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
