IKEA Unpacks PETA and Tokyo Vegan’s First Business Award in Japan for New Vegan Menu
Diners Can Now Assemble a Delicious Vegan Dinner With Katsu Curry, Cabbage Rolls, and More
Tokyo — A Compassionate Business Award is on its way from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Tokyo Vegan to IKEA Japan, which just added vegan katsu curry—complete with a crispy soy cutlet, vegan sauce, and plenty of veggies—to its restaurant menus, along with vegan stuffed cabbage rolls, lasagna, chocolate mousse, and more, with vegan Swedish meatballs slated to debut on October 1. And at the IKEA bistro, diners can now pick up a veggie dog—plus vegan strawberry soft-serve for dessert.
“Any hungry shopper will be delighted by a hearty vegan katsu curry or a decadent dairy-free mousse,” says PETA Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA is recognizing IKEA Japan for meeting the skyrocketing demand for food that’s as delicious as it is kind to animals and the planet.”
The new vegan menu items are part of IKEA’s push for sustainability. The United Nations has concluded that a global shift toward vegan eating is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. Each person who goes vegan also spares 200 animals a year daily suffering and a terrifying death and helps prevent future pandemics: Bird flu, swine flu, SARS, and COVID-19 have all been linked to confining and killing animals for food.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
