PETA Asia statement on Malaysia’s revised “orangutan diplomacy”
Please find a statement below from PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker regarding Malaysia’s revision of its plan for “orangutan diplomacy”:
PETA is pleased to see the Malaysian government embracing the suggestions we’ve long advocated for by deciding to keep orangutans in their natural habitats. As I recently wrote in an op-ed in The Sun, countries can establish ties and foster international relations without harming animals and putting their lives at risk.
This decision reflects a progressive approach to diplomacy, one that prioritizes conservation over exploitation, which we have consistently encouraged in our previous discussions on this issue. By adopting these policies, Malaysia is setting a strong example for the ethical treatment of wildlife, and we hope other world leaders will follow this example.
To show our appreciation, PETA is delivering palm oil–free vegan cookies to Malaysia’s minister of plantation and commodities, acknowledging his commitment to animal welfare. We look forward to further positive steps in this direction.
