Photo Op: Sexy Santas to Call Out Gucci Over Cruel Python Skin Sales
What: Ahead of Christmas, a group of PETA supporters dressed as sexy Santas will make a special stop at Gucci to warn shoppers about the cruelty to pythons who are killed to make the company’s bags. The Santas will be body-painted as pythons to remind people that humans and other animals are the same under the skin. The action follows the latest PETA Asia investigation revealing that workers at two python farms that supply skins to a tannery operated by Kering—owner of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent—pinned struggling pythons down by the neck before bashing them over the head with a hammer and impaling them on hooks while they were still moving.
“Every bag and wallet made from a snake’s skin came from a terrified animal who lived in cramped, filthy conditions before being barbarically slaughtered,” says PETA Asia Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA is calling on Gucci to get disgusting animal skins off its shelves and switch to compassionate vegan materials that don’t cost anyone their life.”
