PHOTO: PETA ‘Barbecue’ a Human for Holy Week Vegan Event
“If you wouldn’t eat a human, why eat a pig?” That’s the question PETA supporters asked as they served up some food for thought during Holy Week by “barbecuing” a human under the scorching Manila sun. The demonstration pointed out that cows, pigs, chickens, and humans are the same in all the ways that matter, including the ability to feel pain, fear, love, and joy.
“No sentient being, whether a human or any other animal, belongs on the barbecue during Holy Week or at any time of year,” says PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. “PETA urges anyone disturbed by the thought of frying up their friends to extend that compassion to all animals and go vegan.”
Billions of animals live short, miserable lives in the meat industry, where they’re subjected to extreme crowding, routine mutilations without pain relief, a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse, and a violent, painful death. Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of suffering from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and strokes. PETA offers free vegan starter kits to help everyone make the switch.
PETA Asia—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAAsia.com or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
