Pig Strung Up by the Legs, Thrown Off Tower in Horrific Bungee-Jump Stunt

Posted on by PETA

On Saturday, as part of a promotional stunt at the Meixin Red Wine Town theme park in Southwest China, a pig was tied up with ropes and forced to do a bungee jump. The animal’s screams could be heard throughout the violent 223-foot drop.

This is cruelty to animals at its worst. A bungee jump is a scary experience even for consenting humans who understand what’s going on—just imagine the outright terror of being forcibly strung up by your legs and thrown from a high platform. That’s the treatment that this pig received—just for a cheap spectacle.

Pigs experience pain and fear, just as we do, and this kind of disgusting PR stunt should be illegal. (However, in China, there are virtually no laws protecting animals.)

The theme park deserves every shred of the backlash it’s receiving online—and more.

“I am outraged and so deeply saddened that people get away with this bulls**t for entertainment,” one person wrote on Twitter.

Pigs deserve more than not being used for entertainment—humans have no business exploiting them at all. Yes, this stunt was cruel and awful and should never have been done. And yes, China’s policymakers should implement animal protection laws immediately to criminalize similar displays and prevent them from occurring in the future. Nonetheless, what about the millions of pigs who are killed each year for food? After it was revealed that this pig was reportedly sent to a slaughterhouse following the horrific bungee-jump stunt, countless people took to Twitter to express sadness.

But if this video broke your heart and you still eat bacon, there’s something wrong.

Pigs who are raised and killed for human consumption spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy warehouses under the constant stress of intensive confinement and are denied everything that’s natural and important to them. Mother pigs are impregnated again and again until their bodies give out, and their piglets are torn away from them just a few weeks after birth—and then the mothers are sent to slaughter. On farms, piglets’ tails are chopped off, the ends of their teeth are snipped off with pliers, and the males are castrated.

During slaughter, because of improper stunning methods, many pigs are still conscious when they’re dumped into tanks of scalding-hot water, which is intended to remove their hair and soften their skin.

Do more to help pigs, all of whom merit respect and consideration.

The millions of pigs who are raised each year for food deserve to be left in peace, just as this pig who was forced to bungee-jump did. Please, never frequent any attraction that uses animals—and while you’re at it, leave them off your plate, too.

If you care about pigs and other animals, do something about it—stop eating them!

It might be too late for the pig in this video, but we can still help create positive change for him or her and the billions of other animals killed every year for food. Humans don’t need to eat meat, but animals need to be respected and protected.
