After Watching This Video, You Won’t Want to Eat Ham on Nochebuena

Will you please put yourself in the place of a pig on a factory farm for just a minute?

Pigs are intelligent and sensitive beings, and they each have their own personality. On factory farms, they spend their lives in cramped, filthy warehouses and are denied everything that’s natural and important to them. Mothers are raped and tortured, and when they give birth, their babies are taken away from them at less than a month old. Can you imagine being forced to endure a life filled with terror, as these sensitive animals are?

At the slaughterhouse, many are improperly stunned and are still conscious when they’re dumped into scalding water, which is intended to soften their skin and remove their hair. This is the fate of millions of pigs across Asia—in 2014, over 25 million were slaughtered in the Philippines alone.

When allowed to live naturally, pigs have an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years, but those on farms are sent to slaughter at just 4 to 6 months old.
