When Bill Clinton touched down in the Philippine capital, he was in for a special treat: a dancing “cow” and “chicken” greeted the former U.S. president outside the hotel where he was giving a talk. These “animals” wanted to thank Clinton for rescuing their friends by adopting a new vegan diet!
After initially eschewing meat and dairy products to lose weight in time for the wedding of his daughter Chelsea (a longtime vegetarian), the former commander-in-chief shed 11 unwanted kilos and felt so energized that he decided to make the diet permanent. Having previously undergone two operations because of heart disease, Clinton recently told CNN that he’s trying to stay healthy enough to get to see his grandkids.
Studies have shown that a vegan diet doesn’t just help prevent heart disease but actually helps treat it. “[P]eople who have tried, essentially, a plant-based diet … have seen their bodies start to heal themselves; break up the arterial blockage, break up the calcium deposits around the heart,” said Clinton in another interview with Yahoo! News and CNN. “Eighty-two percent of people who have done this have had the result, so I want to see if I can be one of them.”
