Speak Up for Animals in Japan NOW!

Since a massive earthquake struck Japan in mid-March, many residents in the Fukushima area—home to one of the country’s nuclear power plants, which is now unstable—have been unable to return home because of fears over radiation poisoning. Despite the fact that farmed animals and companion animals are dying of starvation in Fukushima, the Japanese government has declared a 20-kilometer no-go zone around the nuclear plant and has threatened to prosecute anyone who enters the area. It is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of pigs, chickens, and cows inside the zone.

While local animal protection groups in Japan have been advised that government operations are underway to rescue companion animals, farmed animals are apparently continuing to suffer. Animal protection groups who have offered—at their own risk—to enter the 20-kilometer “no-go zone” to help with rescue efforts have not been permitted to do so. Many animals have already died of starvation, dehydration, or hypothermia.

Please take action now. Click here to urge the Japanese government to take immediate action to transfer farmed animals inside the 20-kilometer no-go zone to facilities where they can be cared for or to euthanize any animals who are suffering. The animals would thank you, if only they could.
