Eating Eggs? You’re on the Fast Track to Cancer!

EggsMen beware! A recent study undertaken by the U.S. National Institutes of Health has found that men who eat two and a half eggs or more per week increase their risk of prostate cancer by a whopping 81 percent compared to those who eat less than half an egg per week.

The study took place over 14 years from 1994 to 2008, following the lives and diets of 27,607 men who were cancer-free at the beginning of the study. Researchers also found out that men already suffering from prostate cancer increased their risk of premature death by consuming poultry and red meat.

While Mexico leads the world in egg consumption by eating on average 438 eggs per person per year, following the logic of this study China, Japan, and Malaysia are the most at risk for prostate cancer in Asia—with a per capita consumption of more than 300 eggs per year (roughly six per week per person). The Philippines has a more moderate intake, ranking 20th in Asia in terms of egg consumption, with individuals averaging 92 eggs per year.

Although researchers have hinted at it for decades, we now know decisively that eggs are bad for our health. That’s not the only reason to give them up, though, as the eggs on your plate are the result of a causing a hen to suffer intense cruelty.

Battery hens are kept in vast warehouses with as many as 50,000 other imprisoned birds, where lighting and ventilation are controlled by machines. A system failure means mass death. Hens are confined to cages with five to 10 other birds, and the cages are so small that the birds can’t even extend their wings, which atrophy from disuse. Their legs and feet grow twisted and deformed from standing on wire cage bottoms.

Chickens can live for up to 15 years, but hens on egg farms are “spent” (unable to produce enough eggs to remain profitable) after just one or two years. When hens are no longer used for laying, they are killed on the spot or sent to slaughter so that their worn-out bodies can be used for cheap nuggets and soup.

The verdict is in! Not only are eggs bad for your health, they’re also terrible for your karma!
